The establishment of the Institute of Education itself has a specific purpose to assist in the development of education in Northern Nigeria by playing an advisory and consultative role in all matters relating to the development of education in general and quality control in teacher education in particular. The work of the institute at the lower levels of education aims at improving the quality of intake into university faculities and thus a service to them. The contribution of the institute can therefore be appreciated in terms of its pioneering role in developing programmes, its innovations, capacity to solve, identified problems and the direct impact of its activities. It must again be emphasized however, that the institute activities complement those of the academic faculties.
